Os El Capitan on Macbook Air is hung even on reboot

Hello, I have a Macbook Air El Capitan that has hung, several apps open, and still is hung even on reboot. The mouse does not work, so I can't even close individual apps to try to identify the culprit. Open apps are Mail, Firefox, Calendar, Messages, Kindle, Bluetooth Keyboard Setup (unintentionally opened). Anyone know how to remedy? Force Quit does not work and powering off just reloads and crashes before I can shut apps properly. Thanks!

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Hello there DivotGirl,

It sounds like you are turning on your computer and it immediately becomes unresponsive. I would start by booting to safe mode to clear out some system level caches, and perform a disk check and repair if necessary:

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

That should get you all set. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, let us know how that goes.

Hello norm123, thank you so much for posting an answer to my dilemma. After seeing all the posts after mine I never expected anyone to notice. For the sake of others who may experience this I will share what I have done. It appears as if one of my apps was hanging the whole system and because the default selection in a force quit warning box is "open windows upon reboot" (may not be that exact wording), every time forced a reboot, those same apps would reload and hang it all up again! grrrr. My first order of business when I get it working again will be to remove that check mark! I did indeed try the safe boot and that did allow me to close all apps, with the help of an external keyboard from my iMac. Although the external keyboard did not fully funtion, it did at least me to quit out of the open apps. Unfortunately my trackpad and keyboard on the Macbook are not working, even after resetting the NVRAM and SMC.. After finally calling Apple support, my only option now is the Genius Bar. Again, thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
